Our Mandate

In Accordance with the Road Traffic Act, CAP 548 of the Federation (1990) and Transport Regulation as gazetted 2005 and reviewed in 2022, the Directorate of Road Traffic Services was established in 2001 to perform Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) functions for the Federal Capital Territory.
These Mandates include:

  • Planning, controlling, and management of all aspects of vehicle registration, documentation and licensing.
  •  Vehicle inspection, testing and certification,
  • Driver training, testing and licensing,
  • Traffic monitoring, management and control,
  • Highway and street patrols to enforce relevant traffic laws and regulations,
  •  Road transport monitoring and control.
  •  Motor vehicle related trades control, registration and
    licensing.


All other matters related thereto, including collection of fees and levies on the matters stated above.

Core Activities

The Directorate of Road Traffic Service in line with her renewed effort to improving on her mode of operations to meet up with global standard by ensuring sanity and safety of lives and properties on FCT road had employ technology in all her operations for prompt service delivery, hence the following Technologically driven services are currently employed by the Directorate for good services delivery:

  • FCT Electronic Vehicle Registration Portal (evreg);
  • Abuja Inspector Terminal.
  • Abuja Computerized Vehicle Inspection center;
  • Licence/E-Testing for Driver’s Licence;
  • Drivers / Riders training;
  • E-Enforcement;
  • Revenue generation

The FCT Directorate of Road Traffic Service was established pursuant to 1980 International Treaty on the Harmonization of Highway legislations in the ECOWAS Sub-region signed by the Authority of Heads of States and Government that approved setting up of appropriate machinery in member Nations that will be responsible for Motor Vehicle Administration.
